Records Fall Hard
Inside This Issue:
NOTE: We have “all” the Michigan results from the three different high school indoor national meets. However, omissions are quite likely, especially with the two (New Balance & adidas) that don’t list athletes by state. Let us know of anyone missing, and we’ll add them to the web version and our permanent records.
AND ALSO: All three of the nationals define “All-American” as the top 6 in the Championship division. No one from the emerging elite, or national elite, or freshman, or middle school divisions is an All-American. Likewise, while one may be a winner of one of the other divisions, in this newsletter we will only use the phrase “national champion” to refer to winners of the championship events.
Our National Champions
Quincy Isaac

Could Isaac be the best long jumper Michigan has ever produced?
UM-bound Canton senior Quincy Isaac showed great promise before this year, jumping a PR 24-2.25 as a junior, but now he is on a new level. First came 24-5.25 at the LAB in mid-February. Then he demolished the state record with his nation-leading 25-1.75 at the state finals. At New Balance Nationals, he took on the best in the country and made his point. He led from his first jump of 23-11. After a round 2 foul, he improved to 24-4.25 and no one could challenge him after that. He added two jumps in a row of 24-0.75 and then closed with a meet record 24-11.25, the No. 2 leap in state history. “It was the last jump and I just wanted to go for it,” he told Dyestat.
Emmry Ross

UM recruit Ross has bigger goals outdoors.
Earlier we saw Onsted senior Emmry Ross run a state record and nation-leading 2:03.95 in NYC. At New Balance, she made clear that she has more in her tank. Taking the lead before the 400, she led in 60.27. A lap later, she went through 600 in a stunning 1:31.35, breaking a state record that had lasted for 48 years. On the final backstretch she was passed by California’s Makenna Herbst, but she fought back on the final straight to take the win in 2:03.00. The meet record is the fastest 800 ever run by a Michigan prep indoors or out. “This was my moment,” she told Dyestat.
Motor City’s Sprint Medley

The foursome from Oak Park missed their own state record by just 0.17.
The 1600 sprint medley is an event that the Motor City TC has dominated. Indoors, the team owns the six fastest times in state history, and is the only program to have bettered 4:00. They brought that dominance to Boston, leading from the start with the opening legs of its hurdlers, frosh Payton Gee and Howard University recruit Carrie VanNoy. Nevaeh Burns then carried the stick for 400 in a swift 55.41. Frosh Janae Coleman sealed the deal with a 2:12.20 to bring the team home in 3:56.97 for a winning margin of nearly 6 seconds. Burns said of the two frosh on the team, “They know what they have to do.”
And Even More State Records!
Motor City 4 × 400 Runs 3:15.60

Austion finished with an emphatic 47.66.
The state record for the boys 4 × 400 had been around for a long time, more than 23 years. It was set by Detroit Mumford in a special high school race at the USA Championships in New York in 2002, with superstar Kenneth Ferguson a big part of the 3:17.51. This year’s Motor City/Oak Park squad had already run 3:18.93 on the banked track at the Millrose Games, but that record still seemed like a stretch. Luckily, no one told them that. Running virtually alone in heat 14, Phillip Burney led off in 49.29, then Demari Caldwell produced a 48.42. Alex Patterson followed with a 50.23, handing off to junior Rondre Austion. He blazed one of the fastest anchors in state history, a 47.66, to cap a stunning 3:15.60 that took nearly two seconds off the Mumford mark. The next few sections knocked the team down to 5th place (with Bullis setting a national record 3:09.44 in the final section), but Motor City can be very proud of this one.
Will Jaiden Smith Flies 7.71 In 60H

Smith with coach Candice Davis Price, herself a Hall of Fame hurdler.
Belleville’s Will Jaiden Smith has been in the thick of things all season with his teammates from one of the nation’s best hurdle squads. He came to New Balance with a PR of 7.74 from the Michigan Showcase. That had scared the state record of 7.72 that Utica’s Freddie Crittenden (now an Olympian) set in winning the national high school title in 2013. In the prelims, he ran a comfortable 7.93 to advance easily. Then in the semis he grabbed lightning, exploding to a new state record 7.71 that placed him 2nd among all qualifiers. Smith’s timing was off a tad in the final, but his 7.84 in 5th assured him of All-American status.
Northville Boys Crush 4 × 800 in 7:42.95

Northville continues to run the 4 × 800 better than any Michigan school in history.
The fast heat of this event was one of the greatest indoor prep 4×8s of all-time. Two teams went under the meet record by about 5 seconds. The Six Mile foursome ran 3rd, producing a scintillating performance themselves. Rece Grezak led off in 1:57.27, Ben Hartigan followed in 1:56.56, and then things got really fast, with Logan Mullan at 1:54.85 handing off to MSU signee Ethan Powell, who clocked 1:54.27. The resulting time is nothing short of stunning: 7:42.95, slicing nearly 6 seconds off the 7:48.64 that a Brendan Herger-anchored Northville squad set in 2023.
Stiverson Pops A Big 51-8

The Montrose soph continued to attack the record book.
It didn’t happen at nationals—she finished 3rd at Nike—but Addy Stiverson of Montrose wasn’t quite done with the indoor season. Throwing at Saginaw Valley’s Div. 3-4 Invitational, she warmed up with a 43-8, then popped a 51-8 to break both the state record as well as the national sophomore record. She followed with a steady series of 48-8, 47-4, 48-4, 49-6. Her best mark is now just 3 inches short of Sarah Marvin’s outdoor record 51-11 from 2021.
