Complete Results For Michigan Athletes
Inside This Issue
Big weekend, and yes, this is the biggest newsletter ever. It’s actually massive. It includes complete Michigan results from the four national meets held over the long weekend, complete with notations about records, all-time lists, etc. For a lot of you, the newsletter will get cut off in your email, and you’ll have to click on a link to see the rest. Go for it. There’s some commentary at the very end that’s worth it.
Our New Balance All-Americans

Leo Schlecter’s shot of the 110 hurdle finish, Will Jaiden Smith on right. (@leo.schlecter)
Nastasza Dudek 2M 2nd- The Pioneer frosh placed 2nd in the 5000, slashing a monstrous 3-minutes-plus off the state record for 9th graders with her 16:18.78. That makes her No. 3 in state history outdoors, behind legends Audrey DaDamio and Erin Finn.
Sydney Kuhn 400H 3rd - The UM-bound graduate of Swan Valley blasted a 58.66 in the 400 hurdles, just missing her own PR by 0.02. She placed 3rd overall. Notable also was Jada Wilson in 8th, becoming the fourth athlete in state history to break 60 seconds with her 59.89.
Motor City Boys SMR 4th: Alex Patterson, Phillip Burney, Rondre Austion and Demari Caldwell (1:53.87) combined for the No. 6 performance in state history, finishing 4th in 2:24.70. Note that in 16th was the LAB TC, with Greg Myers anchoring in 1:50.53. That was the second-fastest split of the 74 teams running.
Motor City Girls SMR 3rd: They wanted to defend their title, but they ended up 3rd in race where the top two teams had 2:03 anchors. Carrie VanNoy, Payton Gee, Nevaeh Burns, and Janae Coleman (2:12.58) led until the final 200 in slicing more than a second off the State Record at 3:54.72. The top three teams all broke the meet record.
Cora Williams SP 2nd: The Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard senior, bound for Indiana State, had a best of 44-10 coming into Nationals. Her first three throws gave her nothing to celebrate: 43-7.25, 41-0.5, 41-5. That placed her 5th going into the final three. Then she went nuts. She hit a PR 45-7 in round 4, moving to 3rd place. Round 5 was even better: 45-9.25. Then she blasted into the runner-up position with her final toss, 46-10.25, more than 2-feet farther than her old PR. She is now the No. 16 thrower in Michigan history.
Victoria Garces 2M 5th - In a very even-paced race, the Dow senior moved up to 5th place after a 5:04 first half. The Duke recruit passed 3000 in 9:31.31 (No. 8 in history) and hit the line in 10:09.83, making her No. 5 in state history over the full 2-mile distance.
6 Mile Boys 4 × 800 6th - The boys from Northville came within 0.17 of tying the meet record. Didn’t matter; that would be nowhere near what they needed to defend their title. In a race that set a new national record (7:26.12), Rece Grezak (1:55.52), Ryan Stojov (1:51.63), Ben Hartigan (1:55.15), and Ethan Powell (1:54.13) struggled to stay in the fight but still produced the No. 3 time in state history.
Shore Girls 4 × 800 2nd - The girls from West Ottawa battled with West Springfield for the second spot, finally prevailing in the end in 8:59.64, the No. 13 time in state history. The team: Ella Wierks (2:15.81), Emma Gunnett (2:16.27), Ava Porras (2:15.58), Collette Wierks (2:11.98). Their school record makes them the No. 6 school in Michigan history.
Izzy Robbins PV 2nd - The Grand Haven junior bounced back well from the D1 Finals, where she placed 2nd. Here she made a string of heights on her first attempts, then cleared a state-leading 13-1.5 on her first. She went out at 13-5.25.
Giovanni Charles HJ 3rd - The Walled Lake Central grad, this year’s D1 champion, jumped clean through a season best 6-8.25, but could go no higher, as the next bar decided the top 8 places.
Bradley Richards HJ 4th - The state leader at 6-10.25, the senior who competes for Muskegon’s Catholic Central had one miss at 6-7—that’s what put him a place behind Charles. After the 6-8.25 clearance on his first attempt, the Cornerstone recruit could go no higher.
Nevaeh Burns 400 6th - Despite drawing difficult lane 2, the Motor City sophomore, winner of 2 straight D1 titles in the one-lapper, fought to a first-place finish in her heat in a state-leading 53.44, a time that makes her the No. 5 performer in state history. That crushed her recent PR of 53.86.
Frog Leg/Temperance Bedford Shuttle Hurdles 6th - Elevated to All-American status after the DQ of Belleville for a clearcut early departure, the foursome of Caleb Agius, Liam Agius, Alex Mapes, Sawyer Ulery came through with a 59.34.
Kentwood TC/EK Shuttle Hurdles 4th - The squad of Aaliyah Bailey, Taryn Jones, Journey Cottle, Abigail Terry clocked 1:01.20.
Shore TC/West Ottawa DMR 3rd - The girls from West Ottawa knocked down their own state outdoor record of 11:37.19 with an impressive 11:35.85 performance (still shy of Pioneer’s absolute record of 11:21.95 indoors). Collette Wierks opened with a solid 3:31.62, followed by Emma Gunnett (57.77), Ella Wierks (2:13.23) and Ava Porras (4:53.24). They improved two spots from 2024.
Bolt TC/Dow DMR 5th - In 9th after the first hand-off (Emilia Garces 3:40.04), a swift 400 leg from Sydney Roberts (56.96) brought the Dow girls up to 5th. They fell back to 7th on the next leg (Allie Metzler 2:23.21), then Victoria Garces ran a strong 4:47.33 to secure All-Am status in 5th with their 11:47.54—they are now the No. 5 Michigan school ever.
Will Jaiden Smith 110H 2nd - Our state record holder at 13.35, the South Florida signee from Belleville got through the rounds with solid runs of 13.68 (No. 12 performance ever) and 13.55 (No. 6). He drew lane 4 in the final. Officials had some trouble with noise at the start; in their first attempt to get them going, the fired a call-back. Smith got a yellow card for moving (but not jumping) before the gun. More restrained for the next run, he started cautiously. By halfway, favored Kahiem Carby, in lane 5, led. Smith pressed hard to catch him, hitting hurdles 7, 9 and 10. He made a valiant attempt to catch Carby at the line, missing by just 0.01. His 13.45 (0.7 wind) is the No. 3 performance ever, after only his record and Schmar Gamble’s 13.36 at the D1 finals.
Emmry Ross 800 2nd - On paper, the Onsted senior was the favorite, as the national leader with her 2:00.53. But she knew it would be tough. Natalie Dumas of New Jersey had already won the 400H (55.99 meet record) and the 400 (51.14 meet record) and anchored the runner-up sprint medley with a 2:03.90 (compared to her PR of 2:02.75). I suspect Ross learned from her Brooks experience and knew that if she went out too hard, Dumas would likely catch her. Instead she went out in front at 58.85 (compared to 58.02 at Brooks). Then Dumas surprised by passing her with 300 left. Ross did not relent—for once she had someone to chase. Coming off the last turn, she rallied and started cutting down on Dumas’s lead. Dumas started losing her form and it looked good for Ross, until Dumas realized the threat and produced one final burst. She won in 2:00.11, her third meet record of the meet, While Ross hit 2:00.25, a state record that will likely last a long time.
Motor City/Oak Park 4×4 2nd - Having run 3:43.52 to win the D1 title, the Oak Park girls had a shot at the podium, but national leader Bullis (3:33.30) was always heavily-favored. Dayshana Kellogg led off at 56.5, followed by Janae Coleman (55.9). That had the squad in 4th at the midway handoff. Brilliant closers by Carrie VanNoy (55.71) and Nevaeh Burns (53.57) brought the team up to 2nd in 3:41.65, the No. 3 performance in state history (after two other Motor City times).

Ross is now No. 6 in U.S. history. (@leo.schlecter)
Our Nike All-Americans
Byron Center Boys SMR 6th - Cooper Mitchell, Parker Holford, Xavier McCallum (50.14) and Blake Teunissen (2:00.98) combined for a 6th-place finish in 3:35.20.
Sadie Dykstra Heptathlon 5th - The Yale junior delivered a wonderful surprise for those of us who have been waiting for our next great heptathlete to appear. At the D2 Finals, she was 4th in both hurdle races and the long jump, and 5th in the high jump. Here she put together a very balanced performance over 2 days: 100H—15.08 [0.3], HJ—5-5, SP—31-2.75, 200—26.27 [0.1], LJ—17-1.5 [0.4], JT—96-8, 800—2:26.46.
Byron Center Boys 4 × 200 4th - The team of Cooper Mitchell, Connor Nealon, Parker Holford, Brody Leyendecker put together a 1:28.34.
Lorelai Zielinski SP 4th - The Traverse City Central soph never got the big throw she was looking for, but not for lack of trying. She opened at 46-10.75, then hit 47-5. A foul followed, then her best throw at 47-8.5. She worked to try to bust one out in the final rounds but ended up with two more fouls.
Katie Blue PV 6th - Fifth at the D1 Finals for Grand Ledge, the junior produced her best vault of the year, 13-0.75 to place 6th. She attempted 13-4.5 as well.
Byron Center Boys 4×4 4th - The guys from Byron Center produced another great relay, finishing 4th with a 3:17.84. Cooper Mitchell (50.85), Xavier McCallum (49.18) and Blake Teunissen (50.48) got the stick to super anchor Brody Leyendecker, who blasted a 47.33.
Our Adidas All-Americans
Paxton Heitsch Hammer 3rd - The Catholic Central junior added 15 feet to his best. His 190-6 ranks him No. 2 in state history.
Daelyn Jones 100 5th -The Grand Rapids Christian soph has a best of 11.88 this season. Into a stiff 2.8 headwind here, she was only able to run 12.19, good for 5th.
Laila Hawkins 100H 5th - The Cass Tech junior was the D1 runner-up in 13.98w. Here she hit 14.14 in the heats and the final to place 5th.
Courageous/Cass Tech SMR 4th - The Courageous team clocked 4:13.28 to earn AA honors: Laila Hawkins, Caylin Ivy, Layla Phillps, Malise Brown.
Malise Brown 200 2nd - The Cass Tech junior improved big this year and placed 5th in the D1 200. Here she finished 2nd with a solid 24.03 into a headwind.
“All-American” Confusion Rampant
We didn’t even get through Day 1 before we saw coaches and athletes celebrating by slapping on the “All-American” label after finishing in the top 8 in a competition where getting All-American status is impossible. Sure, we love celebrating our sport and our kids, but not to the point of misleading them.
Who is an All-American? At New Balance, only the top 6 in the championship events get All-American status. Middle school and freshman races do not count. Nike expanded their awards this year from 6 to the top 8. Again, championship events only, no emerging elite, freshman or middle school. Adidas awards All-America status to the top 6 in “championship elite” events only.
To recap for those in the back: there is no such thing as an “Emerging Elite All-American” or a “Freshman All American.” Finishing high in any competition is a thrill, but calling a kid an All-American here is kind of like bragging about winning the slow heat.
It might seem cheap to some that the certificates aren’t handed out as freely as ribbons on a grade school field day, but organizers want the term to have real meaning, ie., the top 6 (or 8) athletes in the nation.

College / Pro Highlights
Former Seaholm star Audrey DaDamio is reportedly headed to Duke for grad work and to finish out her NCAA eligibility. At Stanford she has run 16:00.65 and 33:21.12 and competed in two NCAA XC championships.
At the Paris Diamond League, Grace Stark (Lakeland) demolished her best time, hurdling 12.21 to edge the World Record holder by 0.03. Wind was just 0.7. The mark makes her =5 in world history.
Also in Paris, Anavia Battle (Wayne) won another 200 in 22.27 (0.9).
Gabriela Leon (East Kentwood) vaulted 14-6.25 to place 8th.
Freddie Crittenden hurdled 13.30 in Paris, but didn’t advance to the final.
Other Things
Correct me if I’m wrong: Unless MHSAA rules have changed recently, it’s still a violation to compete in post-season nationals under your school name and in what appears to be a school uniform, right? We all know that using your town/city name is okay (let’s say, Mishewaka), but the school name is not (ie, Mishewaka Academy). It’s weird to see some of our schools seeming to openly violate this. But as I’ve said, please correct me if I’m mistaken.
Wavelights at Nationals? Call us a no vote. Nationals are championship meets, and the pacing lights have no place where athletes should be focused on place and not time. They won’t see wavelights at state finals, college conference meets, college nationals, Worlds or Olympics. If you think that HS Nationals should just be a giant all-comer meet where PRs are more important than winning, you may just be operating on a different page... (or you may just be reflective of the direction that meets like Nike Nationals are going).
Top 6 Not Enough: The time has come for New Balance to follow Nike’s lead and award All-American status to the top 8 in every Championship event… especially when you consider that the Philadelphia affair is far bigger and better balanced than Eugene’s. Motor City had three 7th places that to us seem very worthy of All-American treatment: Carrie VanNoy’s 13.81 finish in the 100 hurdles, Rondre Austion’s 46.95 in the 400, and the boys 4×4’s amazing 3:13.27 (with an Austion 46.54 anchor). Both VanNoy & Austion would have been 5th at Nike; the Motor City 4×4 would have won there.
The Kids Are Alright - They may not be All-Americans yet, but they are national champions. Check out how our Michigan middle-schoolers dominated the distances at New Balance, often with stunning meet & state records: Eliza Schwass won the 800 & 1600, Alexandra Scappaticci the 2M, Hudson Doll the 800, 1M and 2M. The future looks bright!
