Onwuzurike & Jackson Highlight NCAA Meet

Still only a sophomore at Stanford, Brother Rice grad Udodi Onwuzurike, the 2021 MHSAA 100 & 200 champ, has made himself a national champion. After placing 6th in the 100 final in 9.98 (his PR is 9.92), he won the 200 by mere inches with his 19.84 performance. That didn’t match the 19.76 he ran in the qualifying heats. Needless to say, he has stamped himself as the fastest sprinter ever to come from Michigan (next best on the ATL is 10.10 and 20.09).

Kaila Jackson has had a dream of a freshman campaign at Georgia, finishing as runner-up in the NCAA Indoor 60 and making All-American in the 200. Outdoors, she ran the fastest 100 ever by a Michigander at 11.04 (with a windy 10.95. She finished 4th in the NCAA 100 and ran on the 6th-place 4×1. Not many athletes can claim to be 4-time NCAA D1 All-Americans while they’re still 18.

As fun as it is to celebrate the national success of young people we saw grow up on the tracks of Michigan, it’s also important to remember how relatively rare it is. Like many, I watch our high school state finals and find myself thinking, “Oh, this one’s going to be great in college, that one’s going to be an Olympian someday…” And yet so often, when I look at results from a few years back, I’m reminded of some of those great prospects and I think, “What ever happened to…?”

While most every high school track star says they want to succeed in college, the truth is, making it in the world of track & field at that level is harder than we often think. And it’s a much more complex situation than just saying, “So-and-so wasn’t good enough.” Having the physical potential is one thing. Having the stars align so that potential can be realized is dependent on so many other factors.

Not a scientific study, but looking back at the D1 individual champions from 5 and 6 years ago gives me a list of 43 names. Remarkably, 26 of them competed for a full 4 years in college track & field. Several became All-Americans, and two became Olympians. But 17 of them didn’t complete a full college career. In fact, 8 of them never made it to the first meet, and of the 9 others, most didn’t survive their first year.

Sometimes it’s because they’ve finally discovered a social life, or discovered that they didn’t actually want to be great athletes as much as their parents wanted it for them. Or they discover that the team environment and the coaches weren’t exactly what they thought they signed up for.

However, maybe we should also consider that sometimes it’s not a bad thing at all for an athlete to move on to other things. Academics, careers, relationships can in the long run be more important than sports. And that’s OK.

The Post-Season Nationals

Kimes (center) broke the state record three times in the same competition.

Wow! What a flurry of activity this week has been! Perhaps the highlight came from Kellen Kimes. The Liberty-bound senior from Hart would have been a good, but not exceptional, shot putter and discus thrower. But he fell in love with the hammer, an event we don’t even offer to preps in Michigan. He didn’t let that stop him. Last year he won Nike Nationals. This week, he finished 2nd to a Canadian but he destroyed his own state record by more than 27 feet! One might be inclined to say, “Well, Michigan doesn’t offer the event, so the record must be weak.” Hardly. His 223-4 ranks him No. 4 in the nation. And he had slim fouls that were several feet farther. He says he’s done with competing this summer: “I know I have a lot more in me but I want to get to summer training and prepping for the 16 pound… I’m super excited.”

National titles at the championship level (as opposed to “rising stars” or “emerging elite”) were few, but impressive. The Northville boys won the NBON 4×8 in the No. 3 time in state history, 7:36.81. David Whitaker broke the race open with his 1:52.33 and Brendan Herger closed with a stunning 1:49.79.

Motor City’s men won the 1000 sprint medley (formerly the “Swedish” medley) in the state’s No. 3 time ever, 1:56.48. Gavin Rawls, Deon Cleary, Quinton Blakely, Rondre Austion continue to improve. Three of the four came back two days later to record a state leader in the 4×4, 3:17.95.

Many others impressed as well—here’s an incomplete list—Morgan Roundtree winning the Rising Stars 100H in 13.79 wind-legal; Rachel Forsyth getting All-American honors in 5 events, including a 4:41.48 mile; Kamryn Tatum sticking to the 9th grade events but recording the state’s fastest times this year in all the sprints: 11.82, 23.93, 55.28; Hunter Jones closing out his career with a blazing 8:43.71 two mile at Brooks and then a 4:06.93 mile at Nike; Owen Westerkamp chopping more than five seconds off the state record in the 2000 steeple with his 5:56.38 for 5th at New Balance There’s so much more.

Below you will find how all the Michigan entries did at the post-season shoe championships. There are surely some names missing, but you’ll let me know, right?

IF THERE IS ANYONE MISSING, PLEASE LET US KNOW!! With so many kids being listed as “unattached” with no towns or states, if a name didn’t jump out at me as one I recognized among the thousands of names, of course I missed it. But I want to be complete and show everyone for the historical record, even if they had a bad day.

Who’s This Man?

I’m sorry to disappoint the history buffs with no “Legends” article this week. High School nationals and Father’s Day made time management especially challenging. But maybe you’ll have fun trying to figure out who this long jumper is (and where he is). The only hint I’ll give you is that this Big 10 champion is now a noted artist.

The Little Stuff At The End

The Maltese Beat: I don’t know how many of you follow the Maltese track & field scene, but I can make a wild guess. Anyhoo, the Mediterranean island nation has picked up some new star athletes. Northville’s McNamara sisters, Gina and Clare, apparently exercised their dual citizenship options and transferred their nationality via World Athletics so that they can represent Malta instead of the U.S. internationally. In their first competition for their new nation, the Games of the Small States of Europe, Gina won gold in the 800 (2:12.46), 1500 (4:36.81) and 5000 (17:11.32), and Clare won bronze at 800 (2:16.92). You might remember Clare as a sophomore at the D1 Finals, winning the long jump, taking 2nd in the 400 and running on two All-State relays. She later competed for Michigan, where, like her big sis, she was an All-Big 10 athlete.

Help Us Out: Still trying to figure out how to do this newsletter in a way that’s sustainable, as several of our recent issues have helped create horrible weeks for me in a time management sense. I need to find a way to do this and still get some sleep. And I’d also like to get back to the bigger Michtrack task, that of researching our state’s track history and publishing that material. Can the idea of Michtrack as a functioning nonprofit work? You can help by signing on as a monthly supporter.

Paper checks work too! We’ve had a few people in recent weeks fill out all of the forms to donate and then not complete the process. My guess is that they’re nervous handing over their credit card info to a company they’ve never heard of, Zeffy. While Zeffy is legit (I checked them out carefully), I understand your leeriness in today’s world of scams and scoundrels. So if you want to make an old school donation, you can always write a check to “Michtrack” and send it to us at 3130 Kensington, Dexter, MI 48130. It’s a tax deduction, by the way.

Back Issues Available: If you want to see the back issues, they can be found at this link:

There’s also a sign-up form there in case you want to sign up any other emails or friends to the newsletter. We’re trying to build our numbers. We’re at 550+ now, which is still small compared to the nearly 4000 that follow Michtrack on Twitter. We need to hit 1000 before Beehiiv (our host) allows us to generate any income via advertising.
